WELCOME

Welcome to our third edition of Aesthetic Medicine magazine. The last six months have just flown by since launching the first edition in South Africa and hosted our first Convention. We are delighted to have recently announced the dates for next year’s Aesthetic Medicine Convention to be held at Gallagher Exhibition Center on the 6 & 7 June 2025, and are working on putting together a programme packed with trending and informative content to keep you abreast of the most current science, applications, technology, product innovations and business insights. We will ensure an impressive lineup of speakers, networking opportunities and the latest innovations showcased on our exhibition floor.

This month’s issue focuses on menopause—a topic that deserves considerable attention within the medical aesthetics field. Many women remain unaware and misinformed about menopause and its physical, mental, and emotional impact. Recently, my housekeeper experienced a dizzy spell that led her to fall and break a mirror. It was only after a doctor’s diagnosis that she learned she was going through menopause, despite suffering from common symptoms for months. This highlights the crucial need for education and awareness. With proper guidance, women can navigate this life stage more comfortably, experiencing fewer symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, and night sweats. This is where you, as aesthetic practitioners, can make a profound difference.

While a single section cannot fully explore the complexities of this subject, in this issue, we spotlight some of the most significant aspects of menopause and delve into the products and treatments that can ease its symptoms. Special attention is given to vaginal atrophy and incontinence, along with the latest advancements aimed at rejuvenating and repairing the effects of aging and childbirth.

This month’s clinical reports offer a comprehensive look at combining polynucleotides with toxin fillers and the tear trough technique. In our business section, we explore the art of effective communication and address current aesthetic trends, including facial balancing and clean skincare.

As we approach the close of another year, we wish you a joyful and rejuvenating festive season and much success for 2025.

Navigating Menopausal Skin
Menopause – a time of wisdom and independence, but for our patients it is often synonymous with collagen loss, increased wrinkling, and those perplexing bruises that suddenly appear on the forearms. The exit of oestrogen triggers a cascade of changes, with skin taking the hardest hit. In clinic, we see this in the form of sagging, thinning, and an increase in visible vascular changes like telangiectasias. For menopausal skin, simply recommending a moisturiser isn’t enough. A more integrative approach is essential.
