OPTODERM'S CBD-POWERED SKIN TRANSFORMATION

In the rapidly advancing world of dermatological science, CBD has emerged as a game-changing ingredient, offering a multitude of benefits for skin health. OptoDerm, at the forefront of skincare innovation, has harnessed CBD's potential in their groundbreaking cream and serum formulations, backed by compelling scientific evidence.

Cannabis indica (hemp) is one of two main varieties of cannabis. Its main active molecule CBD (cannabidiol) has no psychoactive activity and provides many benefits for the skin.

OptoDerm’s CBD-containing products are formulated with pure CO2-extracted, hemp-derived CBD, combined with its proprietary PenetrX transdermal delivery system. As a cannabinoid, CBD has the ability to not only interact with, but also modulate the Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is a vast signaling system distributed throughout the body – including skin cells.

The skin produces endocannabinoid molecules, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors. These endocannabinoids are constantly released in specific amounts, depending on the ‘healthy need’ of the organ, resulting in the skin’s ‘cannabinoid tone’. The skin’s cannabinoid tone constantly affects all compartments of the skin, as endocannabinoids act on various cell types and contribute to their healthy physiological function. The unhealthy activity of the skin’s cannabinoid tone from endocannabinoid deficiency and dysregulation contributes to the development of skin conditions such as acne, dry skin, inflammation, eczema and psoriasis. This is where CBD intervenes. CBD functions in exactly the same way as the endocannabinoid molecules anandamide (AEA) and 2-AG and binds to the two main cannabinoid receptors in the ECS, namely CB1 and CB2 – these are found in almost every cell type in the skin.

CBD has a multi-action role in promoting homeostasis and skin health. It up-regulates IL-37 (Interleukin 37), a cytokine, which plays a vital role in inhibiting both innate and adaptive immune responses as well as inflammatory reactions. In the skin, IL-37 blocks IL-6 and other inflammatory cytokines secreted by macrophages, yet promotes the production of IL-10 (anti-inflammatory cytokine) and modulates the immune response.

This has significant ramifications in the treatment of conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. It also demonstrates that CBD has the potential to become as important as all-trans retinoids in skin health, proving clinically to have a similar effect. In other words, it accelerates cellular turnover in the epidermis, promoting enzyme, filaggrin and ceramide production – all of which are important for healthy skin. CBD also improves cell differentiation and speeds up the production of new healthy cells.

THE SCIENCE OF CBD AND SKIN GENE REGULATION

Research has shown that, in the concentration and delivery vehicle of OptoDerm’s CBD Serum, CBD can modulate the expression of over 500 genes in skin cells, leading to remarkable improvements in skin health and appearance.

Examples:

• Up-regulation in fibroblasts enhances the production of collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and fibronectin

• In sebocytes, lipid synthesis is either upor down-regulated

• In melanocytes, melanin production is down-regulated

• Inflammation markers are markedly down-regulated

Navigating Menopausal Skin
Menopause – a time of wisdom and independence, but for our patients it is often synonymous with collagen loss, increased wrinkling, and those perplexing bruises that suddenly appear on the forearms. The exit of oestrogen triggers a cascade of changes, with skin taking the hardest hit. In clinic, we see this in the form of sagging, thinning, and an increase in visible vascular changes like telangiectasias. For menopausal skin, simply recommending a moisturiser isn’t enough. A more integrative approach is essential.
