INTIMATELY Rejuvenated

As women transition into menopause, changes in intimate health can affect comfort and confidence. Medical aesthetic treatments offer non-invasive solutions to rejuvenate vaginal tissues, enhancing both physical wellness and sexual satisfaction.

Menopause brings a series of natural changes to a woman’s body, often affecting intimate health and overall well-being. Issues such as dryness, discomfort, and reduced sensation are common but can significantly impact confidence and sexual fulfilment. Advanced medical aesthetic treatments now offer effective solutions to address these concerns, restoring comfort and confidence in women.

Dr Marisa Heyns, general practitioner with a masters in aesthetic medicine and head of clinical at Dermafrica, highlights the growing importance of intimate wellness, which encompasses the physical, emotional, and sexual aspects of a woman's life. It focuses on achieving comfort, confidence, and satisfaction in areas related to intimate function and relationships. "Intimate wellness treatments are increasingly recognised as an essential component of overall wellbeing," she says. "These approaches address common concerns such as vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), vaginal wall laxity, hyperpigmentation, and labia majora deflation using advanced non-surgical and minimally invasive technologies. By rejuvenating the intimate area, women experience improved physical comfort and enhanced sexual satisfaction."

Youthful rejuvenation

The BTL Emfemme 360, one of five treatment applications available on the Exion device is the shortest non-invasive procedure for the treatment of vaginal laxity and sexual dysfunction. With 360° volumetric RF technology and a unique Temperature Therapy Tracker (3T), this 8-minute treatment is quick, easy to perform, and delivers consistent results.

The applicator delivers 360° homogeneous volumetric heating throughout the vaginal canal, offering patients a short and comfortable treatment. Dynamic Impedance Technology ensures uniform heating by regulating energy flow for optimal therapy outcomes. The 3T technology tracks temperature trends throughout the treatment to ensure reliable results, while a variety of tips for both internal and external treatments, make the device adaptable to various patient needs.

BTL also offers the Emsella chair, an FDA-cleared device for treating incontinence by stimulating the entire pelvic floor area. Using High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology, Emsella delivers thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor contractions per session, helping re-educate muscles for incontinent patients. Scientific research has shown that 95% of treated patients reported significant improvement in their quality of life. 076 232 8058

Lightening care

Hyperpigmentation in the genital area is an increasingly common concern among patients, often triggered by hormonal changes, ageing, and certain skin conditions. The Dermamelan Intimate System by mesoestetic is specifically designed to address pigmentation issues in these sensitive areas.

This topical treatment works to lighten darkened skin, regulates melanin production, and even out skin tone, restoring a more uniform appearance to areas like the genito-perineal zone, perianal region, mons pubis, inner thighs, and groin. It effectively corrects hyperpigmentation both in the short and long term while enhancing the overall quality, firmness, and aesthetic appearance of the skin.

The Dermamelan Intimate System involves a single in-office session to initiate the depigmentation process, followed by a tailored home-care regimen to ensure continued skin renewal and pigmentation control. Patients may experience mild redness and sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours after treatment, followed by minor peeling during the at-home phase, both of which are normal and temporary.

One of the standout features of the system is its dual corrective and regulatory action. Not only does it address existing pigmentation, but it also targets the root cause by controlling melanin overproduction to prevent recurrence. The treatment’s gentle yet powerful formulation ensures efficacy while being safe for the delicate skin in intimate areas. 021 917 1911

Non-hormonal solution

AnteAge Vaginal Rejuvenation Solution (VRS) is a non-hormonal at-home treatment designed for vaginal rejuvenation. It features physiologically balanced bio-signals derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell cytokines, which play a critical role in regulating healing and inflammation. These cytokines aid in rebuilding the vaginal wall, promoting healing of vaginal atrophy, and relieving pain and urinary distress. Hyaluronic acid supports tissue proliferation and increases moisture native to the skin. SH-Polypeptide-3 restores vaginal trophism with a similar mechanism to vaginal oestrogen preparations, but without local or systemic hormonal effects. SH-Polypeptide-9 promotes vaginal epithelium growth, down regulating inflammation, while SHPolypeptide-10 promotes healthy blood vessels to support and oxygenate vaginal epithelium. 082 452 7392

Collagen remodelling

As the aging process and childbirth impact vaginal tissue, conditions like Vaginal Relaxation Syndrome (VRS) and stress urinary incontinence become increasingly common. These structural changes, including vaginal laxity and decreased muscle tone, often lead to a decrease in optimal sexual function and overall patient comfort.

Laser therapy transmits controlled heat onto the mucosal surface, triggering immediate collagen contraction, and initiating collagen remodeling and neocollagenesis. This process results in younger, tighter and more elastic vaginal tissue. The Gigaa Laser utilises a 980nm diode laser specifically designed to stimulate collagen remodeling in vaginal tissue. This quick, pain-free procedure can be performed in-office.

For patients with pelvic floor dysfunction, which may cause incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, the Gigaa Laser also strengthens the connective tissue within the vaginal walls and pelvic floor. By improving tissue integrity, the treatment enhances essential bodily functions, including bladder control and sexual health. Using photobiomodulation technology, this non-invasive treatment enhances mitochondrial activity, reduces inflammation, and accelerates healing by increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the affected tissues. 011 794 8253

Tightening action

Medical Laser Technologies (MLT) offers two advanced, non-invasive treatments for vaginal rejuvenation and pelvic health: the Fotona IntimaLase and StarFormer IntimaWave, addressing issues like vaginal relaxation syndrome and urinary incontinence.

The Fotona IntimaLase, a patent-pending Erbium laser therapy, offers a non-surgical option for vaginal tightening. Designed to treat vaginal relaxation syndrome—often caused by childbirth or aging— IntimaLase works through photothermal tightening of the vaginal canal without the need for incisions. Clinical studies have shown that this procedure is both effective and easy to perform, with a strong safety profile.

This 2940 nm Er non-ablative laser, combined with its proprietary "Smooth-mode" technology, thermally stimulates the vaginal tissue. This process triggers collagen remodeling and encourages the production of new collagen fibers in both the vaginal mucosa and the endopelvic fascia, resulting in improved structural support and tightening of the vaginal canal.

Complementing this is Fotona’s StarFormer IntimaWave, which offers a non-invasive approach to strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and treating urinary incontinence in both men and women.

The device uses High Intensity Tesla (HITS) magnetic stimulation to target and tone pelvic floor muscles. This technology strengthens and firms muscles without any physical effort required from the patient. It can be used for both urinary and fecal incontinence. info@medicallasers.co.za

Intimacy renewed

According to the Women’s Health Organisation, 58% of postmenopausal women experience reduced natural lubrication, a key symptom of vaginal atrophy—a condition marked by thinning and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to declining oestrogen levels. Contrary to popular belief, this issue isn't exclusive to older women, and it can lead to discomfort during intimacy, diminished desire, and urinary symptoms like recurrent UTIs.

The AQ Skin Solutions Vaginal Rejuvenation System (VRS) utilises Growth Factor technology, which is clinically proven to alleviate vaginal dryness, soothe irritation, and improve elasticity. The latter can help tighten the vaginal walls in a way that may enhance intimacy as well as female arousal.

Growth Factors are highly specialised proteins naturally produced in the body, acting as message carriers that instruct cells to regenerate, multiply and regulate. The VRS system’s proprietary blend of all-natural growth factors help restore the vagina’s natural ability to lubricate while increasing collagen and elastin production, firming and tightening the vaginal walls to their genetic potential. 021 914 0447

Navigating Menopausal Skin
Menopause – a time of wisdom and independence, but for our patients it is often synonymous with collagen loss, increased wrinkling, and those perplexing bruises that suddenly appear on the forearms. The exit of oestrogen triggers a cascade of changes, with skin taking the hardest hit. In clinic, we see this in the form of sagging, thinning, and an increase in visible vascular changes like telangiectasias. For menopausal skin, simply recommending a moisturiser isn’t enough. A more integrative approach is essential.
